Passing Through

August 26, 2007 | 07:46PM  | maudie dot b - gmail d c | |

Howdy! How ya' been? Long time no see.

Contrary to the evidence, I have not abandoned this blog. This is my home and will remain so until such time I decide to put out a for sale sign or demolish it. This is where I can put my feet up and just ramble about whatever if I so choose.

And I so choose. Grab your favorite beverage and let's go for a ride.

Let's get the poker crap out of the way, shall we? Poker - I hardly know her. I play on average once a week at my local casino. My bankroll is up and down. I've recently started playing Stud/Hi online.

Moving on.

I've been watching more television this summer than I have the past couple of. I'm a reality tv fan with the following in rotation on my dvr:

Big Brother 8 - the most warped season yet.
Top Chef - Howie sweats far too much for my comfort level food-wise.
The Next Food TV Star - my pick won.
Design Star - Robb's going to win
Hell's Kitchen - holy crap... what won't they do for ratings?

The most interesting thing about these shows is how easily I can get sucked in and actually begin to care about who wins. The one that is making me tear my hair out, though, is Big Brother 8. It's a complete train wreck, but I can NOT look away.

You tell me - what kind of a parent, who's daughter hasn't spoken to him in five years, chooses a reality tv show to attempt a reconciliation?? Don't feel sorry for the daughter - she's using that to her advantage as strategy. A pretty, anorexic manipulator par excellance!

Then you have the children of God - the cry-baby and the praying-mantis - who apply their religious beliefs according to how it best justifies their actions or actions against them. No surprises there, unfortunately.

Then there was Jen. Jenuine. Jenth Degree. Jensa Member. Jen. I was so hoping she was faking it - that it was, like, some brilliant strategy to, like, play dumb, and, like, well, what ever. Jen I do feel sorry for. She's one big bundle of low self esteem, only she don't know it.

Ok. I'll stop there. See what I mean? This crap is cocaine.

What else has been going on?

Oh! I launched a new project! With some friends. It was a spontaneous burst of inspiration and within twenty four hours Los Bruncheros was born. I invite you to check it out. It's a group effort focusing on local cuisine and foodie topics, but I hope we can eventually expand to include some writers in other cities who'll contribute. I might know one or two foodies whom I may tap to join the fun.

The timing was typical Maudie, though. There's nothing like launching a food blog when you're in the midst of a diet.

Yup. I'm on a diet. My first real diet - ever. I hit a "stop-gain" number a few weeks ago and realized that I needed to get a lid on it. This is new to me. I was a skinny minnie until my forties then something happened and I started putting on pounds. I don't have an "I'm fat" self-image - in my mind, I'm still a rail. The scale, though, and the mirror tell a different story. As does my incredible lack of fitness.

SO - I'm trying a diet which, in all truthfulness, has me eating more throughout the day than I was before. But, I'm consuming far fewer calories and far healthier foods. And I re-joined the gym so I could hit the treadmill once in a while. I just don't have the mental commitment to go whole hog on a fitness routine just now - but the fact I may be in a bathing suit sometime this fall has me edging toward it...

Trips! I'm taking some short jaunts this fall. The first one is this coming weekend - I'm heading north-east to Philadelphia and Atlantic City. I plan to be a total tourist - camera and all - and see the city of Philly and all it's historical wonder - including one So-Co loving neo-hippy and a chicken-braising pundit I'm sure.

The main destination is Atlantic City, but after some thought, with Atlantic City only an hour away, it made sense to fly in to Philly and rent a car for site seeing. Pics will be posted, you can count on it.

Ok. Well, I have some laundry to fold and a bit of dinner to eat. Thanks for stopping by - as I said at the top of this post, I'm not going anywhere. I'll be back from time to time, as will you, I hope.
