Save the Cheerleader...

October 24, 2006 | 02:09PM  | maudie dot b - gmail d c |

The anticipation of watching this show is like waiting to come home to a chocolate brownie and two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Served by (on?) a stripper from Spearmint Rhino. -Grubby

I'm in complete agreement with Grubby's assessment of the NBC show "Heroes." (make my stripper hetero and male, please...). This show has been the sweet suprise of this season's attempts of the tube-meisters to increase my couch time. I can't add anything to his review, so give it a read and give the show a try.

Since diving headlong into this poker thing, summer-time has become a time away from the tube. I rarely turn it on. Viewing time is restricted to a few DVR'd shows and a bit of mindless candy such as "Big Brother." So, when Fall rolls around, I'm inclined to assess my viewing habits of the previous season, determine what's to remain on my "must see" list and to review what's worthy of adding.

On the "one foot out the door" or "already gone" list is:

"Lost" is losing me - the Others are sadists and the castaways clueless... Hurley should off them all and have a bar-b-que; "ER" is a bad habit; "CSI" is redundant (but, I do get a kick out of CSI-Miami - the writing is hilariously bad which is appropriate for Caruso's hilariously bad acting.. ((its one saving grace is Emily Proctor - I hope she gets a series that's worthy of her someday))); "Survivor" - still has Probst to look at; "Desperate Housewives" - fading from fun and different to tiresome and repetitive; "House" - one more introspective, out of the blue, "I got the cure" moment and I'm done; "Grey's Anatomy" - done and done - should have heeded my impulse to off it last season as soon as the pathetic, setting-womanhood-back-50-years "Pick me... Choose me!" moment occured.

Keepers are:

SciFi Friday: "SG1"; "Stargate-Atlantis"; "Dr. Who"; and if-you-aren't-watching-this-one-you're-insane (I'm talking to you - yes you, you little imp, dammit) - "Battlestar Gallactica".

Additons include the following:

"Heroes"; "Studio60" - discussed with friends and we all agreed, stellar cast notwithstanding, it's hard to care about a tv show that's about a tv show and the ongoing blah-de-blah about the pandering wasteland that is television... however, Monday's episode gave me some hope - a touching nod to the blacklisted writers of the McCarthy era; "Jericho" - only because I'm intrigued by its premise, but I suspect it won't last the season; and, if I can catch up via the freebies online - "The Nine".

Guilty Pleasures:

"Miami Ink"; "Top Chef"; "Project Runway"; and when I need a good laugh (who, in this universe can take Tyra Banks seriously??) "America's Next Top Model".

Absolute musts:

"Anthony Bourdain - No Reservations" - someone give him my phone number...I'm in lust love; and "Discovery Atlas" - I'm having to catch up on this one. I've only seen the one on Brazil which was superb.

Last, but not least by a long shot:

I'm hanging on to my subscription to HBO for one reason and one reason only - the highly anticipated "Deadwood" concluding movies coming next spring. If anyone has any current HBO suggestions, fire away. I doubt anything can match the excellence that is "Deadwood" (except for it's network counterpart "Battlestar Gallactica" ((still talkin' to you, imp))), but I'll give anything with promise a try.

Poker tv? Well, nope. I will skim through it or put it on in the background. It does not enhance my passion for poker nor give me anything new to add to my knowledge. And it won't. Not until the asshats who produce them get it through their neanderthal skulls that the commentary is innocuous and insulting to my intelligence and that they need to broadcast the tournaments live.

On a side-note - I'm back on my "meds" and all is right with the world. However I did manage, in a few short hours, to tilt away a tidy portion of a nice gain made over at Full Tilt last week. Funny how that works...
