Jazzz hot...

June 21, 2006 | 07:06PM  | maudie dot b - gmail d c |

It's that time of year again, when upwards of 30,000 people will be coming together for an annual event spanning decades and just gets better with each passing year.

Nope. Not talking about the World Series of Poker.

belgrave.jpgI'm talking about a local event I've been priviledged to be involved with for nigh on to 15 years. That event would be Jazz in June, a three day outdoor jazz festival that has brought the likes of Ellis Marsalis, TS Monk III, Dotsero, Hugh Masekela, Randy McAllister, The Holmes Brothers and many others to the stage in our fair city.

This is our 23rd festival. And my last one as a board member of the organization that produces it. While I'm relieved to be stepping down (due to other interests attracting my focus), it's bittersweet because it's truly been such a pleasure to serve with a great group of dedicated people over the years.

So for the next three days I'll have little regarding poker on my mind.... Thursday evening, after the the Red Rhythm Band gets their first number underway, I'll sit back in my chair under a tree back stage, pop open a brew and toast the launch of another great festival. Anyone who cares to, can join me in a virtual "dial-a-brew" at around 7pm-ish CST or, oh hell, those that can and want to - gimme a call and you can enjoy a "dial-a-brew with jazz back" at the same time.
