Thanks to my good friend, the Corkster, I've been supplied with tapes of HBO's Rome. I watched the latest 3 hours Saturday after I was unceremoniously ousted from the Sat. w/ Dr. P tourney by none other than Ceej (who made it to 10th with my chips - good job ...).
In the second to last episode, The Spoils, Titus Pullo has been condemned to death in the arena. He hacks and pounds his way through three muscle bound gladiators. It's gruesome - severed arms and hacked legs. Lots of blood and nasty noises. And of course the pizza had arrived just before the scene began ... As Pullo's about to meet his doom by way of the Hulk Hogan of gladiators his friend, Lucius Vorenus, jumps into the arena and goes to battle with the Hulk - ultimately severing his leg then thrusting a spike down his neck into the torso, finishing him and saving his friend.
The carnage thrown into the river during the Full Tilt 9k this evening was no less brutal and bloody. I witnessed sets decapitated by better sets. Boats eviscerated by better boats. Flushes hacked by quads.
And somehow, I made the money - barely:

I attempted this one a couple of days ago - Mourn joined in, too - and we quickly found out this was not even a hair above typical freeroll competition - frequent all -ins in multi-way pots. I was chipped out before I caught on and was out early.
This time, I used what I learned on that previous one and played far more patient and aggressive. Where, against different competion, I might consider finessing a pot with a strong pair, in this tourney I didn't mess around - if I was convinced I had the best hand, my chips got into the middle. And for once, luck was on my side in a few hands, such as the one with my QQ vs AA - I got lucky and flopped a queen.
I was happy with my decisions, for the most part. I made a bad call to an all-in and lost the race, which put a sizable dent in my stack, and as such gave me little leverage with which to chip back up. I was against sizeable stacks who would not be scared off, so I needed strong cards in order to go up against them. I just didn't get them.
Ces't la vie. There will be another day, another chance. A big thanks to BadBlood who stopped by to rail-bird for a moment and brought me some luck.
T-minus 10 days, by the way....
