Jazz is not a technical function of music, it is philosophical function—it is about story telling.
TS Monk, III
Anyone still with me out there? Folks coming here for poker content recently have been sorely disappointed, I'm sure. But, hey, I don't have enough content for a separate "Jazz Perspectives" so, ya'll'll hafta to deal...
Another record crowd - probably 13k - 15k strong came out for the smooth tones of Brent Blount, the cool crooning of Kathy Kosins and the stellar selections of TS Monk, III Monk on Monk.
What can I say about Monk? I had the best seat in the house, back stage-right with a clear line view of Monk behind his drums on the riser. This man is the beat. The band - especially the diminuitive Helen on the piano - gave fitting testament to his father's jazz legacy. It was awesome. Simply awsome.
I'm exhausted - our organization is a well oiled machine - 22 years (I've been involved for about half that) of producing the finest free jazz festival in the southwest (imho), we've got it down to an art. Few problems - and small ones at that... hoo boy.... can't believe another year has come and gone....
You should have been here.
