A miracle on Hwy. 9

April 16, 2005 | 02:02AM  | maudie dot b - gmail d c |

I'm just a little wired right now. It's 1:30 in the morning - I'm exhausted, but know I won't be sleeping soon. This evening was phenomenal. This evening I got to sit down in a casino poker room and play poker. This evening I got to sit down in a casino poker room and play poker - in Oklahoma. And that poker room is a mere 20 minutes from my front door. Un-fracking-believeable. I think only those of us born and bred here can truly understand just how earth shattering that is. We're the state that sits right on the buckle of the bible belt. We're one of the states that helped to legalize prejudice by outlawing gay marriages. We're one of the red states - where good ol' boy politicians seal their deals over 2 inch steaks at the Stockyards and re-strike their bargains with god every Sunday.

Never mind that our current Governor is a Democrat. An odd phenomenon that occurs every now and then - our state is consistently red in presidential elections, but we tend to elect the opposition for our leadership. But if not for Governor Henry, I would not have been able to sit down at a casino poker table this evening with a rack of chips and play cards. And then stand up from that table and walk out of there a few hours later with the bounty of two racks of chips tucked safely away in my wallet.

I arrived home this evening a little dazed by the whole experience and its import. To add to the thrill, after firing up the computer I find out that the WPBT WSOP Event #2 Satellite has finally been posted to Poker Stars. It's now real, folks. Poker in Oklahoma and one of our own will be playing in the World Series of frickin' Poker. I'm just a little overwhelmed...

Stay tuned for a full report of my adventure at the T-Bird with Willie Nelson, Tex 'n Billie Jo, Shaky, Mr. Vegas, and the birthday boy....
