The paper one

Poker Perspectives celebrates its one year anniversary today! If you care to, you can take a look back at our (the royal 'our') humble beginnings.

When I began this blog, I didn't know I was beginning a blog, per se. I actually was focusing on sharpening my CSS and design skills in the hopes to finally get into doing some moonlighting doing simple web-design for folks. Blogs were (and are) the going thing and they rely heavily on CSS for their structure, so I thought I'd design a dummy blog to get the practice in. In the meantime, I was trolling the United Poker Forum and had been reading Felicia's posts which were tagged with her blog address. I discovered the world of poker blogs through her site. And that world was virtually devoid of the female voice. Felicia and one or two others being the only of my gender I could find writing of their experiences playing poker.

A led to B led to C which led to me throwing my blog hat into the ring - I decided to start writing about my own experiences playing online poker. This also led me down a path of finding blog programs to use - even though I could customize my templates in some of the free blog hosting sites, I just couldn't stand the obligatory logos and ads, and I didn't want to pay for a service. So what did I do? I bought my own domain - kebzweb.com - and embarked on setting up my own website.

At first I thought it wouldn't matter whether anyone visited or not. The first incarnation didn't have any comments capability. Then I added comments through Haloscan. I wish I could tell you who left my first comment and what it was, but that is lost to the ether. I can tell you that I was thrilled to see a comment, and it wasn't long before I became a comment junkie. Truly. There were days that if I didn't get a comment, it would depress me horribly.

I kept up with the blog for about a month. I was not doing well at the tables, and after busting to zero, once again, I came close to quitting. But then that free $15 came my way. I didn't post for almost 2 months. I was playing and reading the forums, Felicia's blog and surfing to other blogs from her blog roll. I started posting again in February and shortly thereafter found my way to the source of the Nile. As I was reading, I was shocked to see a reference to Poker Perspectives. He said "Yikes - Poker Perspectives is back from the dead and he's up and posting again." I had arrived.

I've been posting fairly regularly since. And I know 2 things that are true. This blog wouldn't be in existence without poker and I would not have lasted this long playing poker had I not been welcomed into the poker blogging community. When you are able to share your passion with those who are of like mind, it fuels the desire and keeps you going. I have a ton of poker books which are in large part responsible for my growth as a poker player, but being able to share practical experiences with my fellow bloggers and learn from you as well, is definitely responsible for my continuing my journey.

I am a far, far better player than I was a year ago. My bankroll is miniscule, but I have to remind myself that it was resurrected with that $15 from The Gaming Club and I have added nary a dime of my own money to it since. And it would be a lot healthier had I not let my discipline slip a few too many times! I know I'm capable of playing the higher limits, but until the bankroll warrants, I'm playing the limits where the bankroll can weather the variance.

So thanks for stopping by. Say hello from time to time and, if there's anything I can help you with, feel free to ask.

Keep those cards in the air!

Ciao! — Maudie
