To Whom It Concerns:
I just learned of ABC's plan to air an interview with the murderers of Matthew Shepard in a segment of 20/20. This interview is in direct violation of the agreement prohibiting Aaron McKinney from talking to the media. This agreement was made between the Shepards and the defense lawyers at the time of McKinney's sentencing and, most assuredly, saved him from the death penalty. Without their compassion he would almost certainly be on death row today.
What possible purpose can ABC - 20/20 have in airing this segment? It will do nothing but force the Shepards to relive the horror and pain of the loss of their son - again. This is exploitation in it's ugliest form and, therefore, I urge you to demonstrate compassion for the Shepards and not air the McKinney/Henderson segment or any part of it, scheduled for November 26th, 2004.
Please don't let this viewer down. There are few media outlets I rely on anymore due to the same type of expoitative reporting thinly disguised as journalism. I'm not eager to cross ABC off my list.
