On the tournament trail...

July 6, 2004 | 03:10PM  | maudie dot b - gmail d c |

Pauly hit the nail on the head regarding the roller coaster swings of the ring games at Party Poker. I've experienced quite a ride myself in the past week. This weekend I decided to move off the cash tables and turn my attention toward the single table tournaments. I usually only play these if I'm feeling in good 'tournament' form, which is another way of saying, I shy away from them because I hate to lose. Plus, I am not as confident about my tourney play - I still tend to play by the seat of my pants. I'm the comeback queen as evidenced by several miracle comebacks from nearly dead stacks. And, at any given time in a hand, I could no more tell you how many outs I have than predict the winner of the world series next year. With that said, though, I have placed in the money a little better than 50% of the time in the Sit-nGo's.

Sunday I played 3 back-to-back, which I have never done before. They were a $10, $5 and a $20. I had two second place finishes and one third. Later I looked at my stats from Poker Tracker and of the 16 tournies I had plugged in there, 8 had money finishes. I will have to go back through my hand written notes to add in others I have played in the last year, but my sense is that I would still be on the positive side of money finishes, all totaled.

In other news Felicia reports the passing of Andy Glazier. A sad day for the poker world, indeed.

I always find Hank's posts well written and edifying. His latest post regards moving up in limits and short-handed play. After a bit of a rollercoaster at the higher limits he comments:

So for the first time in a while, I felt that old poker bug. Anxiously awaiting the next session, waking up in the middle of the night and thinking, "I wonder what the games are like now..." before falling asleep.

I know whereof he speaks. When I have begun to get stale or feel the grind is getting to be a bit much, I've stepped up to the higher limits, from time to time. It's a great way to 'wake up' the senses and get back in touch with the game There's nothing like the threat of a huge dent in your stack to get your focus back where it needs to be.

Lastly, for you oenophiles out there, BG has posted his current inventory of wine. Impressive list.

Until next time - keeps those cards in the air!
